“You have to go through the darkness in order to see the light. Arthur F. Temple’s poetry bravely illustrates the courage we need to utilize to face our fears and move forward.” Cynthia Brian, New York Times Best Selling Author and Radio Host.
“Those who wish to understand what it feels like to be in the depths of a serious depression, especially companions of the depressed and their therapists, will certainly learn from these writings; those who are themselves struggling with depression should be warned that their own dark feelings might deepen and take greater hold upon them as they read.” - Kristine Morris, Foreword Clarion Reviews

Dark Currents by Arthur Temple, illustrates a life that few people will ever experience. The author takes us through so much sadness, page by page; and each page more painful than the one before. I was embarrassed to feel fortunate not to have experienced such anguish knowing that the writer obviously had. Through poetry and the art of words, Arthur opens his wounds for us to examine. But these are lessons that no one should pass on learning. You feel the sorrow in the helpless child, taught to blame himself for what was wrong with everyone else around him.
I wanted so much for him to find some meaning in it all, but as an existentialist I know full well there is none. It is a stark lesson in the cruelty human beings are capable of inflicting on others. Even those he thought he could trust let him down. For most of us there are safe places, but for Arthur there were none, until he wrote about his wife who was the one true gift in his life. He is finally gifted with something that all of the abusive people in his past will never have.
When I was 17 years old I worked in a nursing home on a floor with patients who were suffering the most. I thought about how everyone should work here so they could gain a perspective on life that would be impossible otherwise. This is how I feel about this book. You will be surprised about how deep the abyss can get and understand what little right you have to complain about anything. You can't help but be moved by the story that comes together through the pieces.
In a short piece called, `Defiance', Arthur writes, "I never heard a kind word spoken to me in this lifetime, save my wife." Well, Arthur let me tell you; it takes courage to pour your deepest feelings on to a page, and your honesty enriches.
I strongly recommend reading Dark Currents. I guarantee it will touch you.
Ray Melnik - existential novelist
He fills the beginning of his book of prose poetry with painful recollections of a childhood spent punished and debased by the "evil spider lady." His chapter of proverbs and society resonate with devastating honesty. But his final chapter on the Abyss is an unrelenting flood of anger and despair; in it, Temple grabs the reader by the lapels and says "look! This is what I've been through!"
But the book closes in a way that makes the reader think that if Temple has survived all of it, then we might be able to, too; regardless of the depths of our own personal abysses, they are all able to be overcome. Through his pain and rage, Temple promotes this message of triumph.

Whatever your situation in life is currently, there was always that time period where you felt trapped perhaps even defenseless and powerless in a particular situation be it with work, family, friends and lovers. "Dark Currents" redefines the word victim. You will become aware that if that situation was never resolved, then long lasting, deep-rooted feelings of fear and low self esteem can last a lifetime. "Dark Currents" takes you into a world without options with scenarios triggering your emotional, physical, and mental states, so you may have the courage to face and anticipate these challenges in life when felt trapped and powerless, and meet them head on. This sometimes not-so-easy roadmap can create the possibility of emotional recovery through the eyes of one who let it go and moved forward. The book "Dark Currents" was my own particular way of unleashing, then letting go of grief and anger - to a value of life that can be elusive and very hard to grasp if you hold on to it. This book defines who you are and allows you to
